On Wednesday, 18 June, 2025, the RMC NDIA Small Business Committee arranged for an afternoon at the Colorado Air and Spaceport (CASP) in Watkins, CO, where the Board and NDIA members toured the tower and base ops before their monthly board meeting.
CASP is a small general aviation airport, although increased demand has warranted several expansion programs in recent years. Currently, the airport serves as the base for a few flying schools, flight clubs, maintenance services, and air rescue training facilities. Due to its location on the flat plains of eastern Colorado, as well as generally cheaper aircraft rental rates, it is a very popular airport for both flight training and recreational flights. It is also popular among owners and pilots of kit-built aircraft, and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) has a strong presence at CASP.
In 2011, the State of Colorado applied to the FAA to certify Colorado Air and Space Port as a spaceport for suborbital horizontal takeoff flights (HTVL and HTHL). The Spaceport designation provides a facility offering suborbital tourism, travel, and cargo transport from one point to another on Earth.
Afraid of heights? Not us! Here we are on the catwalk for the tower. At 200 feet tall, it is the tallest General Aviation tower in North America!
